Why Take An Alaska Vacation?

In Alaska, a traffic jam is more likely to be caused by motorists watching a moose and her calves than by actual gridlock. You can hike all day and see more wildlife than other people on the trail, or go fishing in a remote lake and have it all to yourself. Alaska has so many mountains and glaciers, most of them haven’t been named yet. It is nature at its grandest and most beautiful. It is the last great wilderness in the American west, and it’s also really fun! In winter or summer, you’ll find a wide range of tours to suit all ages and interests in communities statewide. Alaskans are welcoming and friendly, and eager to share their beautiful home with visitors.

When Should We Visit Alaska?

Most Alaska visitors come during the summer months, from mid-May to mid-September. The summer offers the widest range of tours and adventures for visitors along with temperatures that range from the mid-50s to the mid-80s, depending on what region of the state you visit. (Temperatures along the coasts and in the Far North are cooler than in the Interior, which features the hottest summer temperatures.) Travel during a “shoulder season” – early May to late September – to find better prices and more availability than during the middle of the summer.

Winter ups the ante on only-in-Alaska vacation experiences. Have you always dreamed of watching the Northern Lights (Aurora) paint surreal ribbons of light across the sky? Wondered what it would be like to glide quietly across a snowy landscape by dog sled, or on skis? Winter is the perfect time to experience Alaska as Alaskans do – and to take part in our favorite annual events. In February and March, a wide range of festivals and celebrations combine with warmer weather and more daylight hours for perfect winter vacation conditions.

What Should We Do In Alaska?

Alaska’s most popular visitor experiences include rail travel; flightseeing around mountains and glaciers; viewing marine wildlife and coastal scenery for one or several days with our Alaska cruises and packages; sport fishing for salmon or halibut; and bear viewing. Alaska has more national park land and protected wilderness than the rest of the United States combined, and hiking, rafting, canoeing, kayaking and wildlife viewing are popular activities in the parks. Most communities feature museums or other cultural facilities that tell the story of Alaska’s history and people. Gold panning and gold rush history are also popular. Whatever your age, fitness level or desires, Alaska has a tour option for you!
