Barrow

A Journey To The Top of the World

Learn about the traditional culture of Alaskan NativesBarrow is the northernmost community in the United States, 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle on the Chukchi Sea coast.  The community is traditionally known as Ukpeagvik, “place where snowy owls are hunted.”  Barrow takes its modern name from Point Barrow, named in 1825 by Captain Beechey of the Royal Navy for Sir John Barrow of the British Admiralty.  Barrow has approximately 4,429 residents of which 61 percent are Iņupiat Eskimo. Although Barrow is a modern community, subsistence hunting, fishing and whaling are still very important to the local economy. Many residents who work full- or part-time continue to hunt and fish for much of their food.  Visitors learn about the North Slope’s traditional culture at the Inupiat Heritage Center, where they can also purchase arts and crafts such as baleen boats, etched baleen, carved ivory, masks, parkas and fur mittens.  Your tour includes a chance to examine the tundra, search for hundreds of bird species, view the ice of the Arctic Ocean and walk on a beautiful sand beach as far north as you’re ever likely to go.  Throughout you will have a chance to interact with local residents who enthusiastically enjoy sharing their stories and culture. Extra brave guests can join the most prestigious Polar Bear Club in the world by choosing to swim in the Arctic Ocean (optional).
