Important - This program includes overnights in Juneau before and after the stay in Glacier Bay. All flights in Southeast Alaska are weather dependent. The itinerary considers weather delays due to unpredictable weather in Southeast Alaska.
In the early afternoon board a small plane for a 25-minute scenic flight to Gustavus, the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park. On arrival, take the shuttle transfer to Glacier Bay Lodge. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy a walk or relax. Overnight at Glacier Bay Lodge.
Early in the morning, depart from Bartlett Cove for your 8-hour narrated cruise of Glacier Bay National Park. Watch for whales, Stellar sea lions, puffins and sea otters as the high-speed catamaran cruises through the park to the face of the Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers, two of 16 tidewater glaciers found in the park. You may even be fortunate enough to see glacier calving (ice falling off into the ocean). Lunch is included and park rangers are aboard to provide interpretive information. The boat will return in the late afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Explore the Huna Tribal House, watch a Park Ranger evening presentation or just relax. Overnight Glacier Bay Lodge.
Sleep in today. Later this morning, take a 3.5 hour whale watching cruise into Icy Strait, one of the best summer feeding grounds of humpback whales in Southeast Alaska. Their unique feeding techniques, acrobatics and vocalizations make every tour unforgettable. Besides seeing the amazing humpback whales, the boat tour offers best opportunities to see other marine wildlife such as Minke whales, orca (killer whale), Stellar sea lions, sea otters, Dall’s porpoise, harbor porpoise, bald eagles, puffin, Arctic terns, glaucous-wing gulls, and a wide variety of other shore birds are often observed as well. After the tour, return to Glacier Bay Lodge where you can have a late lunch. Later in the afternoon, a transfer is provided from the Glacier Bay Lodge to the Gustavus Airport. If you would like to book the standard program but with upgraded rail seating, the option and surcharge will be listed when you save to your cart.
The program will include standard rooms at this category of hotel where possible. Alaska has very limited hotel choices in remote areas and small towns. The properties will typically offer a wider range of services such as a full-service restaurant, room service and perhaps a pool or spa facilities. Please be aware the upgraded accommodations in downtown Anchorage do not have hotel shuttle services. Many of the upgraded hotels also offer guaranteed view rooms for additional cost. If you would like a specific room type, in addition to the upgraded program, please ask us about availability and cost difference.
All journeys between Anchorage and Whittier are in standard seating as deluxe dome cars are not available on that route.
Weather Cancellations:
Fights to and from Gustavus / Glacier Bay may be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather. Missed services in Glacier Bay may be refundable but only if you contact us immediately (that day).
