This 2 week self-drive route is perfect for both first time and returning visitors to Alaska and the Yukon. The tour features most major highlights in Alaska, along with Canada's Yukon Territory. Highlights of this tour include Anchorage, coastal town Seward with Kenai Fjords National Park, historic gold rush history of Dawson City, Yukon's capital city Whitehorse, beautiful Kluane National Park - a world heritage site, Alaska's Golden Heart city of Fairbanks and wildlife viewing in Denali.

15 Days / 14 Nights

 

Day 1:  Anchorage Arrival

Pick up your rental vehicle at the Anchorage Airport.  You will overnight in Anchorage's central downtown area.

 

Day 2: Anchorage to Seward / 127 Miles

Plan 3 hours driving time, not including stops.

A great driving day awaits you! Just outside of Anchorage you will drive along Turnagain Arm which offers one of the most picturesque scenery. Watch out for beluga whales and also mountain sheep. Stop at the Portage Glacier visitor center before you continue your drive onto Alaska's Kenai Peninsula towards Seward. When you arrive in Seward, stop at Exit Glacier and visit the Alaska Sealife center. Overnight Seward

 

Day 3: Seward

Today is at your leisure. Enjoy optional excursions, including a cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park, a helicopter dog sledding tour, or a visit to an Iditarod musher homestead and dog sled ride (not included).  Overnight in Seward. 

 

Day 4: Seward to Sheep Mountain area / 241 Miles

Plan 5 hours driving time, not including stops.
You drive the scenic Seward Highway back north to Anchorage and continue on the Glenn Highway north. In Palmer stop by the Musk Ox Farm and later enjoy views of fascinating Matanuska Glacier. There are some hiking trails nearby the glacier. You may also want to experience a guided glacier hike or an exciting river rafting tour on the Matanuska River. Overnight Sheep Mountain Lodge or alternatively Wasilla area

 

Day 5: Sheep Mountain area to Tok / 214 MilesGold Dredge

Plan 4 hours driving time, not including stops.
Continue up the highway to Glennallen, where you will turn to the northeast toward Tok. This route takes you along the border of Wrangell – St. Elias National Park and provides beautiful views of the mountains. Tok is located at the crossroads of the Al-Can, Glenn, and Taylor Highways. Overnight Tok.

 

Day 6: Tok to Dawson City / 187 miles
Plan 5 hours driving time, not including stops.
The Top of the World Highway (partly gravel road!) brings you through spectacular backcountry and gold mining areas into Canada's Yukon Territory. When the highway reaches its highest elevation, incredible views into far-reaching countryside open up. Before you reach Dawson City, you cross the Yukon River by state ferry. Upon arrival in Dawson City you might feel you just landed in a different century! Experience the old Klondike in its well-kept color and fame. Overnight in Dawson City.

 

Day 7: Dawson to Whitehorse / 327 miles
Plan 6.5 hours driving time, not including stops.
Today you travel the Klondike Highway east to Yukon's capital city, Whitehorse. Your drive takes you through the interior of the territory, following the Yukon River. Overnight in Whitehorse.Visit Canada's Yukon Territory

 

Day 8:  Whitehorse to Skagway 109 miles / 175 kilometers

Plan 2.5 hours driving time, not including stops.

Today you will drive south along the Klondike Highway. It is another of Alaska’s spectacular highways with Emerald Lake, Carcross desert and the small community of Carcross. The Yukon River Suspension Bridge provides excitement and scenic views from high above the river. Cross the Alaska/Canada border and continue to Skagway. This tiny town is part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Overnight in Skagway.

 

Day 9: Skagway to Haines Junction / 152 miles

Plan 3.5 hours driving time, not including stops, plus 1-hour ferry ride.

This morning, ride the Alaska Marine Highway south along Lynn Canal to Haines. Take some time to sightsee in this small fishing town known for having the largest bald eagle population in the world. From here, drive north into Canada. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you pass by the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Haines Junction is the headquarters of Kluane National Park. There are numerous hiking trails in the area. Overnight in Haines Junction.

 

Day 10: Haines Junction to Tok / 297 miles

Plan 6 hours driving time, not including stops.

Your route today takes you along the shores of beautiful Kluane Lake. Cross the border back into Alaska and continue driving on the Alaska Highway with scenic views of the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, containing 924,000-acre with flat river basins, extensive marsh and lake complexes, mountains and two major glacial rivers. Tok is an important transportation hub on the Alaska/Canada Highway. Overnight in Tok.

 

Day 11: Tok to Fairbanks / 206 miles
Plan 4 hours driving time, not including stops.
Today you will drive the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks. Visit the towns of Delta Junction and North Pole along the way. North Pole is home to the famous Santa Claus House. Fairbanks is often called “The Gateway to the Arctic.” Local attractions include the Museum of the North, the Musk Ox Farm, Pioneer Park, and the Ice Museum. From here, you can take an evening tour to the Arctic Circle, a gold mine tour, or a riverboat cruise (not included). Overnight in Fairbanks.Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park is a highlight

 

Day 12: Fairbanks to Denali National Park / 125 miles
Plan 2.5 hours driving time, not including stop.
This morning you have time to explore Fairbanks at your leisure. Later today you will take a short drive south to the park entrance of Denali National Park. Overnight at the Denali National park entrance.

Day 13:  Denali National Park
Early this morning, embark on a 6 to 8-hour Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (55 miles into the park). The park is inhabited by many different animal species, and with some luck you may see bears, caribou, moose, sheep, wolves and a variety of birds. Mt. McKinley may also be seen, weather permitting. A snack lunch is included. Overnight at the Denali park entrance.

 

Day 14:  Denali to Anchorage / 237 miles
Plan 5 hours driving time, not including stops.
This scenic drive takes you back to Anchorage. A must stop is the quaint town of Talkeetna, known for its specialLog Cabin Visitor Center in Anchorage backcountry-town charm. Weather permitting, Talkeetna can have one of the best views of Mt McKinley and the Alaska Range. You also can depart on a spectacular flightseeing tour from here or a riverboat excursion (not included). Overnight in Anchorage.

 

Day 15: Anchorage

Today you return your car to the rental station. Depart or start an additional program.

14 day vehicle rental with unlimited mileage, 14 nights accommodation, ferry from Skagway to Haines for passengers and vehicle, bus tour into Denali National Park with snack lunch and park fees, and all taxes.

1) With this tour you cross borders between USA and Canada. A valid passport/visa is a must as per the immigration/custom requirements of Canada and the USA.

2) This tour can also operate with a start/end in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

3) Canadian residents cannot rent a U.S. registered car and drive into Canada from Alaska. Canadian residents can only start this program only from Whitehorse.

4) All rental car agencies require every driver to present a valid drivers license. A valid credit card in each driver's name will also be required on check-in as a security damage deposit.

5) Upgraded accommodation: Upgraded accommodations are not possible in all locations. The accommodations in Sheep Mountain, Tok, Dawson City, Whitehorse and Beaver Creek will be tourist to moderate class!
