  • Highlights: Spend the first night in a private cabin located on the famous Kenai River in Cooper Landing. The next day, begin a rafting adventure down the upper reaches of the Kenai River. Mostly a tranquil float, but with passage through Kenai Canyon there is a bit of whitewater to add to the experience. The turquoise blue waters of the deep glacial Skilak lake provide a spectacular setting for your wilderness experience over the next two nights in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Enjoy the rustic ambiance of a private cabin, hearty meals in the main lodge and daily guided hikes and excursions in the refuge.

Tour Overview

Kenai Backcountry Lodge is located on glacier-carved Skilak Lake in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Southcentral Alaska. The lodge is accessible from Cooper Landing making this lodge a convenient Alaska wilderness vacation. Kenai Backcountry Lodge is an eco-friendly Alaskan lodge with a hydroelectric system that provides the electricity to run the kitchen and laundry facilities. With its peaceful lake-side setting, surrounded by a million acres of designated wilderness, Kenai Backcountry Lodge offers a great adventure exploring Alaska’s beautiful Kenai Peninsula.

Originally built as a hunting lodge in the 1930s, this historic Alaska wilderness lodge has added a few modern comforts to make your visit a comfortable Alaskan lodge experience that will reinvigorate you, and provide the solitude and peace only found in nature. Activities from the lodge include exploring the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge by foot, raft or boat, kayaking and hiking into the alpine tundra in the surrounding mountains. The setting at Skilak Lake is quiet, peaceful and simply spectacular.

1

Anchorage to Kenai Riverside Lodge

Depart Anchorage this afternoon and travel south along the Kenai Peninsula to Cooper Landing. Upon arrival in Cooper Landing settle into your cabin with the rest of the afternoon/evening at your leisure. In the evening enjoy dinner at the lodge and discuss your upcoming activity days with staff. Overnight at Kenai Riverside Lodge.

Kenai Riverside Lodge to Kenai Backcountry Lodge

Today suit up for a rafting adventure on the turquoise waters of the Kenai River. Explore the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge at the river's pace, by raft, on a full-day Kenai River Canyon raft trip en route to Kenai Backcountry Lodge. Venture into unspoiled Alaska wilderness that most travelers never see. Start with a scenic float and keep a keen eye for wildlife. Enjoy a picnic lunch, then raft the spirited class II+ rapids through the Kenai Canyon. End your adventure with a scenic exploration along a pristine glacier-carved lakeshore along the way. Upon arrival to Kenai Backcountry Lodge, enjoy a delicious dinner; settle into your private guest accommodations, complete with down comforters and propane heat and light. Overnight at Kenai Backcountry Lodge.

Kenai Backcountry Lodge

After a savory hot breakfast, choose your pace for the day. Join a guided hike and venture through evergreen forest as you journey to breathtaking alpine tundra. Discover by small boat what wonders lie beyond the next cove. Relax in a cozy wood-fired sauna and if you're feeling daring skip down to the lake for a quick dip! Paddle a sea kayak across a brilliant turquoise glacial lake. Seek out moose, bears, caribou or the local bird life that call this area home and capture that memorable photograph. Enjoy the magic of this peaceful wilderness setting and when you're ready to wind down after "your" perfect day, enjoy appetizers on the lake shore, prelude to a delicious dinner served with gourmet flair. Overnight at Kenai Backcountry Lodge.

Kenai Backcountry Lodge to Anchorage

After breakfast, bid farewell to your new friends at Kenai Backcountry Lodge. Boat transfer across the lake and then enjoy comfortable transportation back to Anchorage. Arrival in Anchorage around noon.
