Tour Itinerary

We recommend planning two nights in Anchorage after the trip in case of weather delay.

Anchorage to Kodiak Brown Bear Center

This morning transfer on your own to Anchorage airport to meet a scheduled flight to Kodiak Island. On arrival in Kodiak you will be met for a transfer to the floatplane base where you embark on a 45 minute Alaska float plane flight to Camp Island on Karluk Lake. The Kodiak Brown Bear Center is situated on a 58 acre site known as Camp Island on the Karluk Lake which has over 30 miles of shoreline with countless tributaries creating one of the highest salmon concentrations on Kodiak. This adventure offers visitors unparalleled access and opportunities to observe and study these legendary bears in their natural habitat and surroundings from viewing areas strategically located in the field as well as from the lodges custom built 30' catamaran. After a brief safety orientation and lunch you will be immersed into a guided bear viewing adventure. The evening dinner is served in the dining cabin. After dinner you'll settle into your comfortable and well-appointed cabin for your first overnight stay at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center.

Kodiak Brown Bear Center

Camp Island affords a lodging buffer from the abundant bear activity around the perimeter of the lake and provides a curious and entertaining population of local wildlife such as deer, fox and river otter. After breakfast you will embark for another day of guided bear viewing to one of three prime viewing areas and enjoy a scenic nature and wildlife cruise of the 36 square mile Karluk Lake by heated catamaran. All guest cabins are directly at the water’s edge and each cabin has a private outdoor deck where bears and other wildlife can often be seen as well. Overnight at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center.

Kodiak Brown Bear Center

The island is one of the most researched bear habitat areas in the world and you will likely have opportunities for interactions with researchers and wildlife photographers today. There is a good chance to see the bears all summer as the area is great habitat for sows and cubs. However, starting August 1st the bear concentrations are beginning their peak due to the prolific salmon runs entering Karluk Lake and this increases the chance to see the bigger male bears called boars. Overnight at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center.

Kodiak Brown Bear Center to Anchorage

In the morning after breakfast, you will have the opportunity to participate in a guided activity (bear viewing, kayaking or fishing). After lunch you will check out and prepare for the return flight to Kodiak in the early afternoon. You will transfer over to the Kodiak Airport and in the evening depart on a scheduled flight from Kodiak to Anchorage*. Upon arrival in Anchorage transfer on own.

* There may be a layover time at the Kodiak Airport for several hours. However due to weather delays and check in requirements, we will not schedule tight connections.
