Admiralty Island Bear Viewing
From Juneau

Tours 329 & 330

Great bear viewing tours from Juneau

In 1979, Admiralty Island became a National Monument, a designation which has kept the island and its inhabitants protected. Appropriately called the "Fortress of the Bears" by the local Tlingit natives, the island is a paradise for bears - over 1,600 bears live here, one of the highest concentrations of bears in the world! These majestic animals come to Pack Creek in search of food and spend much of their summer catching salmon. Observe and photograph the bears in safety from good vantage points. In addition to seeing bears, bald eagles, black tail deer, seals and whales also often spotted in the area.

Admiralty Island Bear Viewiing from Juneau Itinerary

Day Tour  One day bear viewing to Admiralty Island

Transfer in Juneau on own. Depart from float dock by seaplane to Admiralty Island in search of bears.  This tour may include popular bear spots other than Pack Creek depending on the season, such as nearby Windfall Harbor or Swan Cove. After landing you take a short walk with your pilot/guide to the viewing area to watch bears. Trips are planned to maximize bear viewing potential. Return to Juneau by air. Upon arrival in Juneau, transfer is on own.

For the longer tour (5.5 hour long program) you primarily will visit Pack Creek. The 50-minute flight to Admiralty Island takes you across the spectacular coastal scenery of the famous Inside Passage. On landing, you will receive an instructional safety briefing before hiking 1/4 mile to the Pack Creek.

Admiralty Island Bear Viewing tours include

Round trip float plane flight from Juneau to Admiralty Island, guided hiking and bear viewing.  Rain gear, rubber boots and life vests are provided.

Pack Creek and Windfall Harbor permits

The 3-hour bear country flight safari takes you to a remote beach area near Windfall Harbor or Swan Cove (or similar) where you have time on land to view bears.

The 5.5 hour tour has very limited space. This tour primarily goes to Pack Creek and permits are required for bear viewing at Pack Creek. Permits are very restricted. Therefore early booking is recommended. Please also note that the departure times for the tour can vary depending on permit restriction and tides. Windfall Harbor does not require permits and may be used as an alternate bear viewing location.

Physical requirements: Participants must be able to get in and out of the floatplane unaided. Also, participants must be fit enough to hike/walk a few miles through wilderness and dressed appropriately for the day/weather.

Weight limit: Due to safety concerns, there is a 250 lb per person weight limit on this tour. All passenger weights have to be provided at time of booking.

Peak season for bear viewing is mid-July to early September when the bears are feeding on the salmon.

May 15 - Sept 15, 2007: departures depend on permit availability and tides.
Specific departures on request only.

Tours are NOT available from July 1 to 6.
