FAQ New

This is a great resource to get some questions answered, whether you have general questions, questions about Alaska travel planning, tours on our website or the list below. Read on!

1. General Questions About Alaska

Most of Alaska uses Alaska Time, which is one hour earlier than Pacific Time and four hours earlier than Eastern Time. Alaska participates in Daylight Savings Time.

Alaska is the 49th State of the USA. If you live in the US and fly via mainland USA, no passport is needed. If you are flying via a country outside of the USA, then yes, you would need a passport.

US Dollars, we are the 49th State of the USA.

Any time can be a good time. If you are looking to see major highlights such as the national parks, want to go on a day boat tour to see glaciers and marine wildlife, want to see different wildlife and enjoy our great outdoors, then you want to come in our summertime. Our summer starts around Mid-May and is in full swing from June through August. Starting middle of August, our “fall” season starts with more storm systems coming through, resulting in cooler weather with more rain. Early September can be nice, but it can also get colder and in high elevations it could start snowing.

If you want to see the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be dark. You have a good chance to see the Northern Lights starting around August 21 and through early April.

While the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights) is active year-round, it is almost impossible to see during the summer when Alaska experiences nearly constant daylight. The best chance to see the aurora borealis in Alaska is in northern areas during the winter months of October through early April. Historically, the best viewing has been from Fairbanks north and on dark nights with clear skies. According to the Geophysical Institute, February and March are the best months to see the Aurora in Alaska.

3. Information about the Tours on our Website

Most of our Alaska vacation packages are independent tours / self-guided. That means that you will travel by yourself and without a tour guide. We pre-arrange your hotels, all the fun excursions and activities you want to do as well as the transportation to get you from one town to the other. However, there is no tour guide who travels with you. We have a few tours that are guided and where you will travel with a group from the beginning to the end. We also call those guided tours “escorted”.

We have marked our packages “self-guided” or “escorted”, so you can easily see if you travel on your own or with a tour group.

Please note that all tour excursions that we offer and book are shared with other people. If you are looking for private tour excursions, please let us know and we can see what we might be able to accommodate.

Self-guided means that you will travel by yourself and without a tour guide. You could be traveling with a rental car or scheduled transportation such as rail service or bus service. We pre-arrange the transportation, your hotels, and all the fun excursions you want to do. You get detailed information in your travel documents so that you know where and what time to be. Booking a self-guided package gives you flexibility of traveling at your own pace and allows for customized itineraries.

Escorted means that the package is a guided tour where you travel in a tour group with a tour leader from the beginning to the end.

We offer many of our self-guided packages with 2 program options.

Standard Program of Tour Packages

Our standard tour itineraries include accommodation in tourist and moderate-class hotels/motels. These hotels or motels are clean and comfortable. Some of these properties have additional amenities such as a small restaurant, hotel shuttle or may offer a complimentary continental breakfast. Meals are not typically included in our packages and are on your own. We cannot guarantee accommodations that include a continental breakfast. Generally speaking, standard accommodations in Fairbanks have a courtesy shuttle for airport and train departures/arrival. In Anchorage, most hotels do not have a shuttle and you need to make own arrangements. We have good taxi, Uber/Lyft service in Anchorage.

If the itinerary includes travel by rail, train seating for standard programs is standard / Alaska Railroad Adventure Class seating.

Upgraded Program of Tours Packages

Our upgraded tour programs include better moderate and first-class hotels, wherever possible. The properties typically offer a broader range of services, such as a full-service restaurant, and room service. Generally, upgraded hotels do not include breakfast. Hotels in Anchorage do not have hotel shuttle and you need to make own arrangements. We have good taxi, Uber/Lyft service in Anchorage.

Please be aware that Alaska can has limited accommodation choices in remote areas; therefore, in some locations, your accommodation might be better compared to simple motels. Please also note that often hotels in Alaska have a lower standard than hotels in other parts of the United States.

Room types at the hotels in the upgraded programs are typically standard rooms. Several hotels offer upgraded room types such as view rooms, which we can quote and book for you, depending on availability. Higher prices will apply. Please contact us.

If the itinerary includes travel by rail, train seating for upgraded programs is deluxe dome rail car seating. That applies to train routes Anchorage – Seward, Anchorage – Talkeetna / Denali, Talkeetna – Denali, Denali – Fairbanks. Rail service between Anchorage and Whittier only has standard rail car seating.

Most of our tour packages offer the choice of a standard or upgraded program. Hotels in the standard program option typically are good moderate class hotels. Hotels in the upgraded programs are typically a level up and a bit nicer. Please be aware that Alaska can has limited accommodation choices in remote areas; therefore, in some locations, your accommodation might be better compared to simple motels. Please also note that often hotels in Alaska have a lower standard than hotels in other parts of the United States.

3. Booking and Payment Matters

For our packages, you can see a guideline of hotels after you go to Rates and Dates Section, select a date, program, number of rooms and hit the “Continue” or “See more details” button. What you see next is an outline of all services and you can also see upgrade options. Please note that the hotels that you see are a guideline only and are subject to be changed at time of booking. However, they give you an idea of how the hotels will be like. You can click on the blue hotel name and you see more information. Don’t worry, you are not booking anything yet when you get to that screen. You only book after you add the package to your cart, check out and enter all passenger names and enter your credit card information.

Again, the hotels shown are guidelines only. We finalize the hotels after you place your booking order. After everything is booked on our end, we send you a confirmation invoice listing the final hotels that you will be staying at.

Just click the “account” button on the top of the website (person icon is next to it). Enter your email address and password under “existing customers”. If you forgot your password, you can reset it.

As a minimum we need the first and last name of each passenger as well as one good cell phone number and email address of the party. If you are booking a package, we are finalizing your hotels during the booking process and you see the final hotels that you will be staying at in the confirmation invoice.

Yes, you will. After we book everything and once all services are confirmed, we will email you a confirmation invoice. That is your final confirmation.

Yes, absolutely. You will get travel documents from us. We typically issue travel documents 6 to 3 weeks prior.

5. Getting Ready for your Alaska Trip

The general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin next to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you to remove if it gets warmer (primarily fleece or similar). The third layer should protect you against rain and wind if necessary. For day cruises into Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords, and Glacier Bay National Park, we recommend an extra layer, including a scarf, hat, and gloves, as it can be chilly on the boats. Comfortable walking shoes or water-repellent hiking boots are also important. A day pack is a handy item to bring. Other personal items we suggest are a small flashlight, a hair dryer (most hotel rooms do not have them), insect repellent, binoculars, an adequate supply of prescription medication, photographic film, and a camera. You will find a duffel bag or soft-sided luggage is the most practical for the Alaskan style of traveling, particularly when in small planes and boats. Restricting yourself to one piece of luggage is recommended. More Alaska packing tips…

Yes, definitely! We highlight recommend that you print the travel documents that we email you and bring them with you on your trip.

Make sure you bring your credit card but also bring some cash. Many companies are starting to go cashless. Most places in Alaska accept major credit cards, especially MasterCard and Visa. Many accept American Express cards, but there may be a few places that do not. Have an alternative form of payment with you. Some cash is also great for tipping and gratuity. There will be ATM machines throughout your trip. Especially in bigger cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks you should easily find ATM machines.

General Questions

Typically transfers between the airport and your hotel are on own, unless you booked a private transfer with us. Here is guideline of how you get to your hotel in these three major arrival locations:

Anchorage: Check if your hotel has a hotel shuttle. If so, you call the hotel after you collect your luggage and the hotel will send a shuttle. There typically are designated shuttle pick-up sections at the terminal, so check with the hotel where you need to wait and look for signs. If the hotel does not have a hotel shuttle, you take a taxi or Uber/Lyft at your own expense. There is good taxi, Uber/Lyft service in Anchorage.

Fairbanks: Most hotels in Fairbanks have a hotel shuttle and it is best to take the hotel shuttle between the airport and the hotel. You call the hotel after you collect your luggage and the hotel will send a shuttle. You can also check first if maybe the hotel shuttle is already there. Please look for signs for the shuttle pickup area at the terminal.

Juneau: Hotels typically do not have shuttle service. Best is you take a taxi or Uber/Lyft in Juneau, unfortunately availability can be limited.

To find out if your hotel has a hotel shuttle, please look on your accommodation list or on your hotel voucher in your travel documents.

If you booked with us directly, you can log into your account on our website. When you are in your account, click on your reservation number which brings you to your reservation cart. On the left hand side you see a menu. You see Documents and underneath you find all document files we sent you. One of them is Travel Documents or Travel Vouchers. Click on that to access the PDF document. You can now safe it to your computer or you can print it. You can also email or call us, and we are happy to email you your travel documents again.

If you booked through a travel agent and not with us directly, and you need another copy during your travels, please call us and we can email you a copy!

Details for any tours or transfers are on the travel vouchers. If you get a long page document, look at the end of the PDF document file.

Some do and some don’t. If you have your travel documents printed, please hand the supplier the voucher as they request them. If you don’t have a printed copy and they require one, kindly ask the supplier to call or email All Alaska Tours and we will be happy to email them the travel voucher.

We are here for you to support you during your travel in Alaska. Our office is open Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm January through May and September through December. From June through August, we are open Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm and also on the weekends (Sat and Sun) 9am to 5pm. For immediate help, please call us!

Cell service in Alaska has evolved. The main carriers in Alaska are AT&T, Verizon, and now T-Mobile. With any of them you have coverage in the big cities Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. AT&T and Verizon cover many areas in Alaska and you should have decent coverage during your trip with these two providers. Alaska is a huge state though and when traveling between two places and through unpopulated areas, losing reception for some time must be expected. On a mountain hike, you probably will not have reception either!

Typically, meals are not included in our packages. However, it depends on the actual services that are booked. Some hotels offer a simple complimentary breakfast to their hotel guests during certain hours. Remote lodges in Alaska include meals as there is nowhere else to eat. Some tour excursions may include a snack or meal. If you booked the train, meal inclusions depend on your seating / booked rail car class. We list on the travel vouchers if meals are included or available at no cost.

If the airline that you flew with loses your luggage, please check with the airline baggage agent what you need to do and fill out the required claim paperwork. The airline will then bring the luggage to you.

If the train loses your luggage, please check with the train staff for the next steps and how to file a claim.

If you don’t realize until later that you forgot something on a bus or the train, you can call the transportation provider or us and we can see if we can also assist.

We appreciate it when you enjoy your travel in Alaska and can understand if you wish you could stay longer in a place. However, reality is that Alaska is popular, many services are sold out and strict cancellation fees apply to all services. Making changes to your itinerary will not be possible. You will need to stick with your itinerary.

Tipping guides on tour excursions, staff on trains or bus service or staff in remote lodges is standard practice in Alaska and greatly appreciated. Guidelines differ from service to service. We list some tipping recommendations on the travel vouchers.

Travel by Scheduled Bus Service

First, please check your travel voucher and see what the bus departure point is. If your scheduled bus transfer does not depart from your hotel and you need to go to a designated departure point, please do the following:

In Anchorage, check google maps and perhaps you are in close walking distance, and you can walk with your luggage. If you cannot walk the distance with your luggage, take a taxi or Uber/Lyft.

In Denali, most likely, the bus picks up from your hotel in Denali.

In Talkeetna, check google maps and if you are close, you can walk. If you are not close, check with the front desk, they may have a special shuttle that takes guests to the bus departure point. Additional fees may apply for that shuttle transfer.

In Seward, check google maps and if you are close, you can walk. If you are not close, check with the front desk, they may have a special shuttle that takes guests to the bus departure point. Additional fees may apply for that shuttle transfer. If your bus transfer departs from the Seward Cruise terminal, buses are parked outside the security area and there will be many buses, so please make sure you get on the right bus!

In Whittier, the bus departs from the cruise terminal. Buses are parked outside the security area. There will be many buses, please make sure you get on the right bus.

Please make sure you arrive early at your designated bus departure point. Please check your travel voucher for detailed information.

There is no assigned seating on scheduled bus transfers. It is first come, first serve.

Your big luggage will go in the luggage compartment on the bottom of the bus, and you will not have access to it during the bus transfer. You can check 2 bags per person. When you check in for your bus service, your luggage will get tagged so that your bus driver knows where you are going. You can bring a small carry-on with you on the bus, and it can be stored at your feet or on your lap during the bus ride. Please make sure that all your valuable belongings, documentation as well as medication are in your carry-on bag and with you.

The buses are fullsize motorcoaches and do have a small bathroom onboard. However, it is recommended to only use in emergencies.

Travel by Rental Car

Check your voucher, the car rental company that your car is booked with, is listed on the voucher. Generally speaking, our preferred car rental company here in Alaska is Avis Alaska. Avis Alaska is locally owned and operated. We book Avis if you pick up your car in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau or Kodiak. Please check your travel voucher, it lists the car rental company. In Nome, we use a different small local company.

Please check your travel voucher for the rental car. We list the rental station that you need to go to and the address.

In Anchorage there are two Avis stations, please make sure you pick up your car at the right station. Check your travel voucher for the address and instructions. If you arrive at the Anchorage airport and we booked your car with airport pick up, follow the signs to the car rental stations.

The car rental companies charge by 24-hour i increments. Therefore, we book your rental car based on 24-hour periods. The rental time starts when you pick up your car (date and time) as listed on your voucher. You then pay and we book the car in 24-hour increments. That means that you may depart before the return day/time listed on the voucher. However, we try to make sure that you can keep the car until you must return it to meet your departure flight and so that you don’t face late fee charges. You must return your car no later than what is listed on your rental car agreement. Please check the paperwork that you get from the car rental company when you pick up your car. Please note that there are no refunds for early returns.

No worries, Avis Alaska will keep your reservation even if you can only pick up your car the next day. Please check your voucher for the car rental station hours. If you are now arriving when the Avis counter is still open, just go and get your car. If the car rental station is closed when you arrive, please come back the next morning. Please note that your drop off date/time does not change, and stays in full affect, even if you pick up your car later. You need to return your car by the time initially listed. Please verify with the rental agent and check your rental paperwork.

Your reservation only includes the rental itself. Any damage coverage to the car or liability insurance is not included. You may have damage coverage of the rental car through your personal automotive liability insurance. Please check with your car insurance company. Avis also offers different car coverage and you can add additional coverage at the Avis station and pay Avis directly for that. Avis offers optional LDW (loss damage waiver) options, renter liability insurance and additional liability insurance options. Please inquire details at the rental counter.

Avis does not offer any GPS devices for rent. Driving in Alaska is easy! You can even manage with an old fashioned map! We provide driving directions in your itinerary to get you from one place to the next (see your travel documents). There is a limited road system in Alaska, so it will be easy! When you are in a bigger city like Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can use Google Maps on your phone if that helps you to get to your hotel. We also list driving directions to your hotel on the accommodation list (see your travel documents).

If you rent a car and the car gives you any trouble, please contact the car rental company directly. You will get contact information for roadside assistance when you pick up your car. Please follow those instructions and make sure you call the number they give you or call the station where you picked up your car.

Gas stations are widely available in all cities Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Talkeetna, Denali, Fairbanks, Valdez. For long driving days, we recommend you fill up your tank before you start your driving day. There are stations along highways as well but it could be quite the distance between them.

Yes, hotels typically have designated parking for hotel guests. Depending on the hotel, there may be a daily parking fee. We list information in the accommodation list in the travel documents.

Tour Excursions

It depends, please check your vouchers for each tour and if it says you need to reconfirm your tour, please call the tour supplier directly. The supplier name and phone number are listed on the voucher.

First, check your voucher. Some day tour suppliers pick up from designated places and others pick up from hotels.

If you get picked up from your hotel, it will be easy.

If the tour starts from a designated place, check google maps. Perhaps you are in close walking distance. If you cannot walk the distance, take a taxi or Uber/Lyft. If you have a rental car, you can drive yourself to the departure location if there is good parking.

Tour details such as pick-up and check-in information are listed on the travel voucher. If you get a long page document, look at the end of the PDF document file.

Please note that times for the Tundra Wilderness Tour are only determined a few days prior to the tour. You will need to find out your departure time and departure location when you arrive in Denali.

You can ask at the front desk of your hotel in Denali if they have the information. If they do not have the information, please call us and we can give you that information the day before the tour.

Typically, all tour excursions take place in rain or shine. Please dress for the weather! Even if it is not raining before your tour, it could start raining during your tour. Therefore, always bring your rain jacket.
If there is severe weather that impacts the tour and the tour cannot be operated safely, then the tour supplier will cancel the tour. If you decide on your own that you do not want to participate in the tour because it is raining or cold, but the tour takes place, then your tour excursion is non-refundable.

If your tour gets weather cancelled and the tour suppliers makes that call, then you can see if you can reschedule your tour. Perhaps the tour supplier has an alternative tour that you could do instead. If that is not possible, then you will get a refund for the weather cancelled tour. If we booked the tour, the refund will be processed through us. Please ask the tour supplier to send us a message so we can process the refund.

Tour suppliers typically make weather cancellation decisions rather close to the initial departure time. Unfortunately, most services are sold out during the summer and unless the tour supplier itself offers other tours and has space on other tours, we are not able to make alternative tour arrangements last minute. However, in most places there are other activities that you can do such as going on a hike, visiting a museum, or renting a bike for a bike ride.

Hotel Stays

We book rooms appropriate for each party and the hotels assign rooms appropriate for each party.

For a room for 2 people, we often request one or two beds, based on what you indicated at time of booking. Please note that bedding for 2 people in the room is a guest wish and the hotel will do the best to accommodate that wish. There are times when the hotel has to assign you to a room with different bedding. Please always check at the front desk. Please be understanding if a hotel cannot grant a particular bedding wish.

For 3 or 4 people sharing a room, please note that typically there are only 2 beds in the room and at least 2 people need to share a bed.

The size of the beds in the rooms vary from hotel to hotel. If you have a room with 2 beds, the beds may be double size beds or queen size beds.

We list on the travel vouchers of the hotels and in the accommodation list if the hotel has a shuttle or not.

Here is a general guideline:
In Anchorage, airport hotels have an airport shuttle but if you need to get to the train station, you most likely need to take a Taxi or Uber/Lyft (check your travel documents). None of the downtown hotels have a hotel shuttle. We have good Taxi or Uber/Lyft services in Anchorage, and you can get around by taxi and Uber/Lyft easily.

In Seward, hotels have a shuttle that guests can use for arrival and departure. When you are exploring Seward, you can use the free Seward City Tours shuttle if you are staying at a hotel in the Seward city area. You can find out details at your hotel in Seward. The free Seward City Tours shuttle is the best way to get around in Seward when you explore town. If you are staying at the Seward Windsong Lodge, they have a scheduled shuttle that takes guests into town. The Exit Glacier Lodge does not have a hotel shuttle, and we only book this hotel for self-drives.

In Talkeetna, some hotels have a shuttle but not all. Please check your hotel travel voucher. For some hotels there may be a separate transfer fee that you pay to the hotel directly. To explore Talkeetna, if you are staying in or near downtown, you can easily walk. If you are staying at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, they have a scheduled shuttle to downtown.

In Denali, all hotels we book in Denali for people traveling by bus or train have a hotel shuttle. The hotel shuttle takes guests from/to the train station, and they also offer a scheduled shuttle service to explore some of the Denali park entrance area.

In Fairbanks, all hotels have a hotel shuttle that guests can use for arrival and departure (airport and train). If you have a tour excursion where you need to get to a specific place, check with the hotel if they can take you there.

Typically, your hotel stay does not include breakfast or any other meals. There are very few hotels that offer a simple continental breakfast to all hotel guests during certain hours and if your hotel does, then we list that on the hotel voucher. You often find breakfast items that you can buy at hotels or your hotel may have a restaurant. If your hotel does not have that option, you can find places to eat or coffee shops nearby.

If the hotel cannot find your reservation under the name you provided, please have them check all the last names that are listed on your voucher. Sometimes a spelling mistake happens. If you see under the “Confirmation Info” a number then ask the hotel to use that number to find the reservation. If you have multiple rooms booked and you have different last names, the rooms are generally booked under each party’s last name and not all under one name. If all fails, please call us!
