During this 2-day Kodiak Island Alaska tour you explore Kodiak by car. A bear viewing flight safari with expert pilot/guide is included as well. Kodiak Island has approximately 3,000 bears and many more live nearby along the Katmai Coast. The proximity of these two large bear populations make bear viewing on Kodiak Island or the Katmai Coast an ideal Alaska wildlife viewing trip.
Kodiak is the second largest island in the U.S. and offers a diverse culture from its first inhabitants, the Alutiiq people, reaching back more than 7,500 years ago to its more recent history as the first capital of Russian America. Today, Kodiak Island hosts a significant commercial fishing fleet and is one of Alaska’s great adventure destinations.
Important - Please plan two nights in Anchorage after this trip as weather may delay your return to Anchorage. Please also plan a night in Anchorage prior to this trip.
Anchorage to Kodiak
Transfer on your own to the Anchorage airport for a early morning flight to Kodiak Island. Upon arrival in Kodiak, pick up your rental car at the airport and drive to your hotel. Your bear viewing flight safari begins as you depart by sea plane and soar over the island landscape enjoying incredible views of Kodiak Island's rugged landscape. The flight safari is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of flying, with a total of 4 hours total. If the bear sightings are better on the Alaska Peninsula/Katmai Coast, the pilot will cross the Shelikof Straight and fly along the Katmai shoreline. Bear viewing may take place on Kodiak Island itself when the salmon is running which typically is July.
Upon landing you will hike 1 or 2 miles to the best viewing location for the day*. Spend about 90 minutes on the ground watching the bears in their natural habitat. After returning to Kodiak later today transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Kodiak.
* Please note that guests will need to walk/hike from the plane for up to 2 miles over potentially uneven terrain to get to the bear viewing spot.
