Tour Overview

You’ll pack in the action during this 2-day Kodiak Island Alaska getaway tour from Anchorage! After your flight to Kodiak from Anchorage, your fun begins with a bear-viewing flight with an expert pilot guide included in this Kodiak National Park. Kodiak Island has approximately 3,000 bears, and many more live nearby along the Katmai Coast. The proximity of these two large bear populations makes bear viewing on Kodiak Island or the Katmai Coast an ideal Alaska wildlife viewing trip. Then explore the community of Kodiak by car. Kodiak offers a diverse culture from its first inhabitants, the Alutiiq people, reaching back more than 7,500 years ago to its more recent history as the first capital of Russian America. Today, Kodiak Island hosts a large commercial fishing fleet and is one of Alaska’s great adventure destinations.

Tour Itinerary

Important - Please plan two nights in Anchorage after this trip as weather may delay your return to Anchorage. Please also plan a night in Anchorage prior to this trip.

Day 1
Anchorage to Kodiak

Transfer on your own to the Anchorage airport for a morning flight to Kodiak Island (flight could be very early, pending final flight schedule). Upon arrival in Kodiak,  pick up your rental car at the airport and drive to your hotel. Your bear viewing flight safari begins as you depart by sea plane and soar over the island landscape enjoying incredible views of Kodiak Island’s rugged landscape. The flight safari is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of flying, with a total of approx. 4 hours tour time. If the bear sightings are better on the Alaska Peninsula/Katmai Coast, the pilot will cross the Shelikof Straight and fly along the Katmai shoreline. Bear viewing may take place on Kodiak Island itself when the salmon is running which typically is July.

Upon landing you will hike 1 or 2 miles to the best viewing location for the day*. Spend about 90 minutes on the ground watching the bears in their natural habitat. After returning to Kodiak later today transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Kodiak.

* Please note that guests will need to walk/hike from the plane for up to 2 miles over potentially uneven terrain to get to the bear viewing spot.

Day 2
Kodiak to Anchorage

Today, explore the city of Kodiak and surroundings yourself. With its Russian heritage, the city of Kodiak offers visitors fascinating insight into Alaska’s history and cultural make-up. Sights to see include the Alutiiq Museum, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Baranov Museum, and the Kodiak Island Wildlife Refuge Center. In the afternoon, return your rental car at the Kodiak airport and fly back to Anchorage.

Please note that the bear viewing excursions in Kodiak could take place on day 2, depending on availability.

Everything was arranged perfectly. The city tour guides, and the northern lights viewing guides, were professional and very friendly. I would highly recommend letting Alaska Tours arrange your trip. My wife and I were so taken in by this tour that we are planning on going back this spring.
