Celebrating the Dog: From in the Oscars to the Iditarod

It’s February and that means nominations for the Oscar Awards in movie-land, Valentine’s Day and of course, up in Alaska, the buildup to our favorite event of the year – the Iditarod! While “The Power of the Dog” is no doubt on the list of this year’s film credits, we think our four-footed friends also deserve a shout out for their incredible performance every year in the world’s longest dog sledding competition.

Read all about this famous sled dog race to held this year on March 5th, 2022 (the event’s 50th Anniversary) in our story about “Fun Facts About Alaska’s Iditarod Dog Sledding Race“. With 51 mushers vying for the prize money (including 17 women), this year’s race is sure to be an exciting one!

And for those Alaska aficionados who don’t know as much as they’d like to about the sport of dog sledding and mushing, we’ve also done a deep dive into the history and worldwide popularity of the sport in “Mushing: A Unique Sport Among Athletes”.

Want to jump in and try your hand at mushing yourself? A quick day trip from Anchorage to Knik River Lodge and Knik Glacier can put you right in the driver’s seat! Check out our “Helicopter Adventure with Glacier Dog Sledding from Anchorage”.

Another great option for those with more time is our 5-day “Winter Wonderland and Iditarod” tour in March. This fun trip combines an Anchorage city tour with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Anchorage followed by an escorted bus tour to meet real Iditarod mushers, meet their dogs and then witness both the ceremonial start of the 2022 race (March 5th) and the actual race (March 6th) itself!

“Hike”, “Gee”, “Haw” as we like to say in sled dog-speak! Come join us for dog sledding fun up in Alaska!

"Denali captured my soul. I'm not sure how to describe the vastness, the tundra, the wildlife, the rivers, the vistas, Denali itself which peeked out of the clouds for just a few minutes. It was a bucket list trip for us and our bucket overflowed! "
