Tour Overview
On this half day tour out of Kennicott-McCarthy, depart Kennicott on a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920’s as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the base of the Root Glacier, you will strap on crampons and, with some instruction, begin walking on the glacier. Numerous glacial streams cut deep ravines in the ice, forming shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. After enjoying “lunch with a view” you and your guide start making your way back to the town of Kennicott. This tour will return you to Kennicott in time to relax before dinner or join an optional historic Kennicott Mill tour.
