The Wonders of Wildlife: Birding to Whale Watching

Alaska’s vast size and wilderness access is an unparalleled destination for adventure and wonder when it comes to wildlife. Where else can you kayak up to a lounging sea otter, be surrounded by pods of feasting orcas on board a day cruise and spot a bald eagle at the top of a nearby pine – all in the same day?

If whale watching is your thing, you won’t be disappointed in Alaska. Other places might require you spend hours fighting the waves onboard a crowded boat just to see a spout. In Alaska, you have the possibility of seeing multiple whales – from humpbacks to grays – north to south – Juneau to Seward, Glacier Bay National Park to Kenai Fjords National Park – by comfortable day cruise or, with some luck, even from shore. You’ll love reading all about it in our latest blogpost, “A Whale of a Time”.

Many Alaska visitors love to combine whale watching with other fun activities while on vacation. Check out our 5-day Glacier Bay Lodge Tour featuring educational talks from Park Rangers about the habitats and glacier geology of this World Heritage Site with visits to sea lion rookeries and nearby tidewater glaciers.

Now if you are a birding enthusiast (amateur or “para professional”), pull out your Alaska bird list and get cracking! There are over 541 species from 67 different families resident in our state and they include frequent flyers to the rarer migratory wanderers. You can get the full scoop in our “Birding in Alaska” story this month.

And Alaska birders will just love our 8-day Kenai Peninsula Self-drive Tour where you can spot bald eagles by land and marine birds by sea (such as the colorful puffin) all while traveling at your own pace through Seward, Homer, Soldotna, Cooper Landing, Ninilchik and Moose Pass.

There’s much to love in Alaska wildlife. Venture up and discover it all for yourself

"One of the best trips and experiences ever! There are so many great things to say, I do not know where to begin. First, I am on travel newbie. I have traveled many places through different travel companies and of course self arrangement. Therefore, when I say this is one the best ever, it is with careful thought. Thank you Alaska Tours for and excellent experience. Alaska no longer seems like the state "way over there (live on the east coast)" anymore. It is the the state next door. Everything from Anchorage, to Seward, to Denali, to Chena Hot Springs then finally Fairbanks was extraordinary! Thank you, Alaska Tours! "
