This day tour from Girdwood allows visitors to experience beautiful scenery, blue icebergs and a majestic glacier after riding the iconic Alaska Railroad. Transfer from Girdwood to the Portage train station and after a short but scenic train ride, arrive at Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop aboard the Alaska Railroad. After a short one mile van ride and a safety briefing you will be outfitted in a personal flotation device (PFD’s) and a kayak spray skirt. Kayak across the Spencer Lake about 1.5 miles (about 1 hour) and enjoy outstanding views of the glacier and icebergs floating in the lake. After landing the kayaks, a short walk gains access onto the glacier. Before the glacier hike adventure starts, get a safety briefing and outfitted with helmets and crampons. For the next two to three hours you explore the glacier and amazing ice features including crevasses, ice caves, moulins, and more. Experienced glacier guides provide information on local wildlife, history and glaciology. Return to the Spencer Whistle Stop by kayak and van and then travel on the train back to Girdwood.
