If you’re traveling to the Kennicott-McCarthy area to visit Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and want to find a fun Alaska day tour, enjoy this introduction to ice climbing! Root Glacier offers the perfect venue for people of all ages and skill levels to participate in this exciting and rewarding sport. After being fitted for your ice-climbing gear, you will hike a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920’s as a wagon road. Along the way stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks.
At the glacier’s edge, you will learn how to walk in crampons and then hike to a series of ice cliffs. Once at the cliff, you will gear up and your experienced professional guides will teach you several ice climbing techniques. You will spend the day practicing your skills and have the chance to climb several cliffs, staying within your comfort zone.
