This Anchorage day trip departs in the morning on the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery train for a 3.5-hour ride along Cook Inlet’s spectacular Turnagain Arm to Spencer Glacier in the Chugach National Forest. Upon arrival at Spencer Lake, you have time to explore the area independently or participate in a guided walk led by a US Forest Service Ranger. There is a viewing platform where you can see the glacier and benches for sitting or continuing exploring the area with a walk toward the glacier on the low-impact gravel paths along Spencer Lake, offering incredible views of the Chugach Mountains. The trail is about a 3-mile roundtrip. After visiting Spencer Lake, the Alaska Railroad whistle-stop train will return to Portage station, where a waiting motor coach will provide the return transfer to Anchorage.
