Explore Alaska's Kenai Peninsula and winter wildlife during this 8 day driving tour. From Anchorage, drive to Seward, Homer and Girdwood for the chance to see whales, moose, eagles and other wildlife. Tour an Iditarod Sled Dog Kennel and drive a dog sled, cruise Resurrection Bay while watching for wildlife, see eagles on the Homer Spit and snowshoe through the Chugach Mountains! This is truly an unique Alaska experience for the entire family!

 

 


 

8 Days / 7 Nights

 

Day 1: Arrive in Anchorage
Upon arrival in Anchorage, pick up your SUV and drive to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive, you may have time for an optional excursion, such as flight seeing or a guided city tour (not included). Overnight Anchorage.

 

Day 2: Anchorage to Seward / 126 miles

Plan 3 hours driving time, not including stops.

This morning, depart Anchorage and begin your drive south to the Kenai Peninsula. On the way, enjoy the scenic drive along Turnagain Arm, one of the most beautiful segments of highway in the country. Upon arrival in Seward, take time to tour the town. Overnight Seward.  

 

Day 3: Seward

The morning is at your leisure to tour the Alaska SeaLife Center, a state-of-the-art marine science facility. This afternoon, enjoy a wildlife cruise* of Resurrection Bay. Watch for marine wildlife, such as Steller sea lions, sea otters, mountain goats, bald eagles and even whales (wildlife sightings are NOT guaranteed). Overnight Seward.

 

* For tours beginning February 13 through March 16, a 2.5 hour cruise of Resurrection Bay plus tickets to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center are included. For tours beginning March 19 or later, a 4 hour Gray Whale Watching Cruise is included; whale sightings are NOT guarenteed).

 

Day 4: Seward to Homer / 180 miles
Plan 4 hours driving time, not including stops.
Spend the day touring Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. About 2 hours from Seward, you reach Sterling, where you
visit Iditarod musher Mitch Seavey's winter kennel for a kennel tour and dog sled ride. Continue to Homer with opportunities to stop in historic villages, or take advantage of great photographic opportunities along the Cook Inlet coastline. Overnight Homer.

 

Day 5: Homer

The day is at your leisure to explore Homer. The city is known for its vibrant art community and fishing, as well as its winter eagle population. From late December to early May, hundreds of eagles call the Homer Spit home. Overnight Homer.

 

Day 6: Homer to Girdwood / 199 miles

Plan 4 hours driving time, not including stops.
Your journey today takes you back along Cook Inlet to the resort village of Girdwood. Girdwood is the home of the only ski resort in Alaska, the Hotel Alyeska. Spend time relaxing in the whirlpool or take the tram up the mountain to enjoy a first class meal at the Seven Glaciers Restaurant. Overnight at the Hotel Alyeska.

 

Day 7: Alyeska Resort

Today, enjoy a 2 to 4 hour guided snowshoe hike in the Chugach Mountains front range (no experience necessary). During the hike your naturalist guide will point out and discuss the flora and fauna of this unique winter wonderland. The rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy all the resort has to offer, such as skiing, snowboarding, and spa services (not included). Overnight at the Hotel Alyeska.

 

Day 8: Girdwood to Anchorage and departure / 39 miles

Plan 1 hour driving time, not including stops.

Return to Anchorage at your leisure today. Drop off your rental car at the airport. Depart or start an additional program.

 

Please note: Driving times during the winter may take longer due to weather and road conditions.

7 nights moderate level accommodations; 7 days SUV rental vehicle with unlimited miles; Resurrection Bay Cruise with Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center admission OR Gray Whale Watch Cruise from Seward (see note above); admission to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward; 2 hour kennel tour and sled dog ride from Sterling; 2 to 4 hour snowshoeing tour from Girdwood; All taxes and fees.
