Alaska by Winter

The beauty of Alaska in winter abounds in Fairbanks! Known as Alaska's Gateway to the Arctic, Fairbanks lies 358 miles north of Anchorage and is easily accessed by daily flights from Anchorage. Its location under one of the most active Aurora Borealis belts makes it a prime destination for reliable and spectacular viewing. There are also numerous activities offer for winter visitors, such as dog sled rides, visiting a mineral hot springs, and flight seeing. Special events include the Top of the World Classic, Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race, World Championship Sled Dog Races and the World Ice Art Championships.

Itinerary

5 days / 4 nights

Day 1:  On arrival in Fairbanks, transfer is provided to your hotel via courtesy shuttle. The day is at your leisure to explore the city or just relax at your hotel. Overnight Fairbanks.

Day 2: This morning*, you will depart from your hotel for a 5-hour guided sightseeing tour of Fairbanks. Visit the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Museum, where you will marvel at the natural and cultural history of Alaska and discover the science behind the Northern Lights. From here, travel to the UAF Large Animal Research Station, the Alaska Oil Pipeline viewing station, the Fairbanks Visitor's Center, and the Alaska House Native Art Gallery. After returning to your hotel, spend time enjoying the city. This evening (approx. 10pm), you will depart from your hotel for an Aurora Viewing tour. A 30 to 45-minute drive will take you outside of Fairbanks to the Aurora Borealis Lodge, a beautiful, spacious Alaskan log building designed especially for viewing the Northern Lights. Located on Cleary Summit 20 miles north of Fairbanks, the lodge is situated away from the city lights that can hinder Aurora viewing. The lodge's large, north-facing windows allow for optimal viewing from the warmth of the lodge. You will return to your hotel at approx. 2:30am. Overnight Fairbanks. A dog musher with sled dog.

Day 3:  Today, enjoy a full day dog sledding tour where you will learn to drive your own dog team! At approx. 10am, you will be picked up from your hotel for the one hour drive through the beautiful Alaskan winter world to the small town of Nenana. Upon arrival at Goldstream Kennels, you will meet your musher and guide to discuss all aspects of dog mushing and plan out your day. After putting on the proper winter gear (provided) you will tour the kennel, select your dogs, hitch the sled and have your first try at dog mushing. Over the next hour you will learn the skills necessary to run your own team and then you are ready for the big outing. With a four dog team you hit the trail and quietly slip through 14 miles of snow covered forest, frozen rivers and open tundra. Your guide and musher will accompany you during your trail run. Hot drinks will await you after you return to the kennel. You will arrive back in Fairbanks at approx. 5pm. Overnight Fairbanks.

Day 4: Enjoy a visit to Chena Hot Springs Resort and its relaxing mineral hot springs today. You will be transferred from your hotel to Chena Hot Springs Resort, approximately 90 minutes drive from Fairbanks. During your 4 hour visit to the resort, enjoy the relaxing mineral springs and tour the famous Ice Museum and Stoli Ice Bar (included). You may also want to add a dog sled ride, cross country skiing, or massage (not included in tour price). Winter gear can also be rented at the resort for a fee. You will return to Fairbanks in the afternoon. This evening, add an additional evening aurora viewing tour (not included in tour price; see below). Overnight Fairbanks.
