Kodiak Island Sightseeing & Bear Viewing

Tour 101

A lone Kodiak Grizzly bear.Bears are one of the most popular attractions in Alaska today. For most people, Kodiak's identity is inexorably linked with its most famous resident, the Kodiak brown bear. About 3,000 bears inhabit the archipelago, and many more are living along the Katmai Coast. The proximity of these two large bear populations make Kodiak an ideal hub for wildlife trips.

Kodiak Island lies off the southern coast of Alaska, and is the second largest island in the U.S. In addition to bears, the island has a rich historical and cultural heritage with the Alutiiq people who first inhabited Kodiak Island more than 7,500 years ago. Kodiak became the first capital of Russian America and was a major fur trading center for many years.

2 days / 1 night

Day 1:  This morning, transfer on own to the Anchorage airport for the flight to Kodiak. Upon arrival in Kodiak, transfer is provided to the hotel (or pick up your rental car - see options below). After checking in, depart via sea plane for your bear viewing flight safari. As you search for the great Alaskan brown bears you will have dramatic views of Kodiak Island's rugged landscape. If the bear sightings are better on the Alaska Peninsula, the pilot will cross the Shelikof Straight and fly along the Katmai shoreline. If conditions are right, Russian Orthodox Church on Kodiak Island.your pilot may land to provide the best viewing and photo opportunities. After returning to the city of Kodiak, ground transfer is provided back to the hotel. Overnight in tourist class hotel.

Day 2:  This morning you will either depart on a guided city tour of Kodiak or tour the area on your own by rental car. With its Russian heritage, the city of Kodiak offers visitors fascinating insight into Alaska's history and cultural make-up. Sights to see include the Alutiiq Museum, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Baranov Museum, and the Kodiak Island Wildlife Refuge Center. Following the sightseeing tour you will return to Anchorage late in the afternoon. Tour concludes upon arrival in Anchorage.

Round trip flights between Anchorage and Kodiak, 1 night accommodation in Kodiak, 4 hour bear viewing flight safari, choice of a guided 1/2 day sightseeing tour of Kodiak OR 2 day compact car rental. (Note: rental cars are restricted to paved roads only).

*This tour requires a two person minimum for the bear viewing flight safari as well as for the sightseeing tour (if this option chosen)!
Bear-viewing flights may be rescheduled due to local weather conditions. Kodiak has a maritime climate (the bears thrive in it) so we suggest you bring good raingear.
