Anan Creek Bear Viewing
Day Tour
& Overnight Tour 111 From Wrangell
The
Anan Observatory is located 35 miles southeast of
Wrangell In the Tongass National Forest, and offers
some of the best bear viewing in Southeast Alaska. Each summer,
thousands of spawning salmon begin their migration
up-stream, only to be partially blocked by a
waterfall about 1/2 mile from the saltwater. The
large number of salmon attract brown bears,
black bears, bald eagles, sea lions, and seals that
feed in the lagoon.
The observatory is an open log style wood shelter
with two entryways and viewing ports that overlook
the creek and falls. A two level wooden deck
provides additional room for viewing
opportunities.

2: Anan Creek Bear Viewing
Today, a 45-minute jet boat ride will bring you
from Wrangell through the Eastern Passage to Anan
Creek. Seals, Stellar Sea Lions, dolphins, and
occasional Orca feed on herring and smelt found
along our route. On arrival, enjoy a short
hike on a rainforest
trail (1/2-mile) to the observatory platform.
Here, your guide will
give a bear safety briefing. The multi-level
observatory platform provides excellent
opportunities for viewing black and brown bears
fishing 30 feet below and approximately 150 feet
across river. Time spent at the platform is
determined by the guide and based on local conditions;
usually it is 4 to 6 hours. Overnight
Harding’s Old Sourdough Lodge.
Day 3: Departure
Transfer provided to airport by lodge
shuttle after breakfast (not
included). Tour concludes.
2 nights accommodation. Local transfers in Wrangell.
6-hr excursion to Anan Creek
Observatory for bear viewing ** and taxes and fees.
** Depending on bear sightings
and seasons, Stikine River & Glacier Tour
(also 6 hours) may be substituted for the bear
viewing tour.

While bears are sighted in the
area throughout the summer, the best bear viewing
time is during the salmon runs from July 5 through
August 20. However, bear sightings are NOT
guaranteed.
