About Talkeetna Alaska

Talkeetna means "River of Plenty" in the Dena'ina Indian language.Talkeetna is known for its amazing views of Mt. McKinley Located at the confluence of three major rivers (the Susitna, the Talkeetna and the Chulitna River), Talkeetna offered an abundant harvest for the Dena'ina Indians who hunted and fished this area for centuries. In the late 1890's, a trading station was located along the riverfront to supply trappers and miners. A town site was established during construction of the Alaska Railroad.

The historic village of Talkeetna is nestled at the base of Mount McKinley (Denali), North America's tallest peak. Talkeetna has an outstanding panoramic view of the Alaska Range that can be enjoyed and photographed from several places as you wander through this town and discover what this unique location has to offer. Flightseeing, fishing, riverboat tours, hiking, Nordic skiing, mushing, mountain climbers, great lodging, great people... Talkeetna is a place to enjoy no matter what time of the year.

Talkeetna is the staging area for approximately 1,000 climbers each year who attempt to reach the summits of Mt. McKinley (its highest is 20,320'). Talkeetna keeps its mining history alive with renovated trapper and miner cabins used as lodging, shops, and restaurants. The town's original saloons and roadhouses are still in operation. Laid-back to extreme adventure travel is what Talkeetna is all about!
