About Seward, Alaska

Seward, Alaska is a seacoast town 128 miles south of Anchorage.Enjoy a number of cruise shore excursions in Seward Alaska The town is reached by a paved seashore-and-mountain highway. Abrupt mountain slopes cloaked in shaggy summer greens and perpetual snows form an impressive backdrop for this progressive city of some 4,000 people. The town is named for William H. Seward, who arranged for Alaska's purchase from Russia.

It became a town-site in 1903 to serve as a terminal construction point for the Alaska Railroad. Today, Seward is best known as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, one of the Alaska's treasures with abundant wildlife and spectacular glacier scenery. This lush coastal wilderness is home to abundant wildlife including humpback and orca whales, puffins, and Stellar sea lions. The Alaska SeaLife Center, is Seward Alaska's newest attraction with exhibits of sea mammals and fish that make their home in the frigid North Pacific.

Experience Seward / REAL ALASKA TOUR Tour 122 Recommended for families

$133 adult, $81 child (2-11 years)
Learn about Seward’s fascinating history while enjoying the beautiful scenery as you tour the area. Hear about the Iditarod trail and see first-hand the effects of the 1964 Earthquake. Next, enjoy a short walk along the nature trail to the face of Exit Glacier, one of the few glaciers you can walk to in Alaska. Watch for mountain goats, moose or bear on the mountainside. During the salmon runs, you can watch the salmon swimming upstream to spawn. A hearty lunch will be served at nearby Resurrection Roadhouse before you travel to the Seavey homestead and experience a 1.5 hour Wilderness Dog Sled Ride and Tour. At the end of this fun-filled day, your driver will return you to your hotel, cruise ship or the Alaska Railroad depot. All local transportation and lunch are included.

Take a spectacular helicopter flight over some of the most majestic mountains in Alaska. Watch for mountain goats, eagles, bears, moose and other wildlife while flight seeing over the Kenai Mountains and surrounding area of the Kenai Fjords National Park. Upon landing on Godwin Glacier, walk amongst the excited sled dogs at the camp or just take a short walk on 10,000 year old ice.

GODWIN Glacier Dogsled Adventure Tour 130

Imagine running a team of huskies on snow in the summer! This exciting tour combines helicopter flight seeing, a glacier landing, and dog sledding. During your flight, enjoy breathtaking views of Resurrection Bay and glacier-carved mountains. On the way to Godwin Glacier, watch for mountain goats, moose, and eagles. At the glacier, you will be greeted by over 80 Alaskan husky dogs. An experienced guide will explain the history of dog sledding in Alaska and share stories from their own Iditarod races and back country experiences. Excitement is in the air as the team is hooked up and you take off across the snow field. Spend time riding in the dog sled as well as driving the team. This truly is a once in a lifetime experience!

Enjoy a full day fishing trip for halibut, bottom fish (such as rockfish and lingcod) and salmon. Your friendly, experienced captain will take you to some of the best fishing grounds in Alaska. Depending on the fishing conditions, the comfortable boat may drop anchor or drift over large reefs and gravel beds. In addition to great fishing, each trip also provides unparalleled sightseeing and wildlife viewing opportunities in Kenai Fjords National Park and surrounding waters. Kenai Fjords National Park boasts abundant wildlife, alpine and tidewater glaciers, and breathtaking scenery. As you cruise through Resurrection Bay, keep watch for Stellar Sea Lions, harbor seals, puffins, eagles and whales. Cruise past the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, home to a large variety of birds, on your way to either the Holgate or Aialik Glacier to watch for glacier calving. A deli-style lunch is served onboard. The cruise is approximately 110 miles round trip.

On this 110-mile round trip you travel through the Kenai Fjords National Park and the Chiswell Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Watch for Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, eagles and even whales. See examples of Alpine, Cirque, Piedmont and Tidewater glaciers. Witness glacier calving up-close with a stop at either Holgate or Aialik Glacier. A National Park Ranger is onboard to answer questions; they also conduct a Junior Ranger program for children. Tour includes a salmon and prime rib all-you-can-eat-buffet.

KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK CRUISE with FOX ISLAND Tour 125 Recommended for families

This cruise is the only scheduled departure to the Aialik Glacier, the largest tidewater glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. Enjoy a deli-style lunch on board as you cruise through Resurrection Bay to a glacier for a chance to witness glacier calving. The area is also home to plenty of marine wildlife. On the return, the cruise stops at Fox Island for a grilled Alaskan salmon and prime rib dinner at the lodge. Vegetarian options available on request.

Northwestern Fjords Cruise Tour 126 Accessible Tour

Travel deep into the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park to the magnificent Northwestern Fjord. Keep watch for wildlife as you cruise through Resurrection Bay and past the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. You'll experience this glacially-carved region known for its three tidewater glaciers, steep cliffs, and rich waters abundant with wildlife. A stop will be made at a glacier to hopefully see glacier calving. Cruise includes a continental breakfast and deli-style lunch served on board. Distance is approx. 150 miles roundtrip.
Note: The first several hours of this cruise follow the same route as the above shorter cruises.

GUIDED SEA KAYAKING  Recommended for active travelers

Tour 134: 3-hour trip: $70 per person (minimum age 8* years)

This is a fun and adventuresome way to explore the spectacular beauty of Resurrection Bay. Come face to face with sea otters and other marine life as you paddle in your two person kayak along the shoreline of Head State Recreation Area. No experience necessary; instruction and all equipment provided.
Departure time:
9am and 1pm, with an additional 6pm departure available from May 15 through August 22.
Daily departures: May 8 - September 6, 2010.

*Children 8 and older are welcome on the 9am and 6pm departures. Since afternoons tend to be windier in the Bay, the minimum age for the 1pm tour is 12 years.

 

Tour 135: 8-hour day trip:
$139 per person (minimum age 12 years; 2 people minimum required)

Explore the beauty of Resurrection Bay during this full day kayaking trip. Depart from Lowell Point and paddle your two person kayak to Caines Head State Recreation Area. Enjoy a beachside lunch and then hike to a waterfall or, if weather and time permits, to Fort McGilvray for a scenic overlook of the bay. No experience is necessary; instruction and all equipment provided.
Important Note: This tour is very active and can require up to 12 miles of paddling and up to 5 miles of hiking.
Departure time: 8:00am.
Daily departures: May 15 - September 6, 2010.

 

RESURRECTION HIKE & PADDLE Tour 133 Recommended for active travelers

$139 per person (minimum age 12 years; 4 people minimum required)

Spend the day experiencing two perspectives of the landscape of the Kenai Peninsula. This adventure combines a morning hike along the Resurrection River with an afternoon paddle along the shores of Resurrection Bay. Tour includes roundtrip transportation from Seward Small Boat Harbor, kayaking instruction and equipment, a bakery lunch and snacks.

Duration: 7 hours.

Departure time: 9:00am.

GRAY WHALE WATCHING CRUISE Tour 250B Recommended for families  Accessible Tour
$88 adult, $46 child (2-11yrs), $5 infants (0-1yr)

Witness this amazing annual migration of California Gray Whales, traveling over 5,000 miles from Baja California, to the nutrient rich waters of Alaska's Bering Sea. Get a front row seat as these magnificent mammals pass by the mouth of Resurrection Bay. Watch for their bushy, heart shaped blow rising up to 13 feet in the air. A hot lunch is included. Note: Whale sightings are common but not guaranteed.

Duration: 4 hours.

Departure time: 12pm.
