About Haines, Alaska
Nowhere else does the Alaska of
your dreams come alive like it does in Haines!
Located on the
pristine western shores of Lynn Canal, America's
longest fjord, Haines is home to 1,700 year-round
residents. Here you'll
find a perfectly distilled sampling of Alaska's
history, scenic beauty,
wildlife,
arts and culture. The
surrounding mountains, lakes and rivers team with fish
and wildlife. Every fall,
thousands of majestic
bald eagles gather in the welcoming embrace of the
nearby Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
Haines has a rich history.
The area is the traditional home
of the Chilkat Tlingits who were among the most
powerful tribes in the region; they controlled the
flow of trade goods between interior Canada, Alaska,
and points further south. When gold was discovered,
prospectors used the well-established trade routes to
access the gold fields. In 1881, a mission was
established at the old Chilkat village. The village
was named Haines in honor of Mrs. F. E. Haines,
secretary of the Presbyterian home mission board which
had raised funds for the mission. In 1904, Fort
William Seward was built to help boost the local
economy; it played a key role in the construction of
the Haines and Alaska Highways during World War II.
The fort closed shortly after the war, but later was
purchased by a group of veterans. The buildings are
now private homes, hotels, bed & breakfast lodgings,
or shops and the fort remains a prominent landmark.
