Enjoy a day trip from Girdwood to have the truly unique experience of Alaska kayaking and guided ice climbing on a glacier. Arrive at Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop aboard the Alaska Railroad. After a short one mile van ride to the edge of Spencer Lake, you will be outfitted in personal flotation devices (PFDs) and kayak spray skirts. Kayak across Spencer Lake about 1.4 miles (about 30 minutes) to the other side of the glacier. Upon arrival to the glacier, get outfitted with helmets, crampons, and ice picks. After a brief safety lesson and practice getting comfortable with the equipment, the group will venture out onto the glacier itself. About two hours will be spent climbing ice walls near the edge of the glacier. Experienced glacier guides provide information on glaciology and techniques. Return by van and train.
