This active outdoor Juneau, AK day trip begins with a 4.5 mile moderate to challenging hike through the rainforest along Mendenhall Lake. The beginning of the Mendenhall Lake trail is well maintained, while the second half is off the beaten path and can include areas of mud, slippery bedrock, loose gravel and multiple short, steep up and downhill sections. Once you reach Mendenhall Glacier, you will be outfitted in trekking gear. With the use of crampons, you will trek for up to 1 hour on moderate glacier terrain exploring accessible features such as crevasses, ice caves and moulins. The accessibility of ice formations varies throughout the year. Return to Juneau on the same rainforest path.
