Though it is a young city by most standards - it was
founded in 1915 - Anchorage has a rich and fascinating
history. Anchorage began as a tent city to house
Alaska Railroad workers. Soon, entrepreneurs flocked
to the area to provide services to the railroad
workers, their families and others immigrants to the
area. The city grew and was finally incorporated in
1920. The next big event was the Good Friday
Earthquake which occurred on March 27, 1964. The
earthquake was the largest ever recorded in North
America, registering 9.2 on the Richter Scale.
Anchorage was only 80 miles from the epicenter of the
earthquake, resulting in millions of dollars of damage
to the city. A photo display in the Sunshine Plaza on
4th Avenue depicts the damage to Anchorage and other
communities in south-central Alaska. Thanks to a
beautification program begun in the 1980s, Anchorage
is now surrounded by hundreds of miles of trails and
dotted with attractive parks.
