Kenai Fjords
National Park
Remnants of an Ice Age
What you will find
Very
few places on earth match the beauty of Kenai Fjords
National Park. 20,000 years ago, during the last ice
age, enormous glaciers carved U-shaped valleys that
eventually filled with seawater. These geologic
wonders were named fjords, and they encompass the
majority of the Kenai Fjords National Park
coastline. A large amount of marine wildlife inhabit
the area during the summer months. Stellar Sea
Lions, harbor seals, puffins, eagles and even whales
are often spotted during day cruises into the park.
Kenai Fjords is also home to the enormous Harding
Icefield which feeds the numerous glaciers that flow
to the sea. The icefield draws adventurers for
glacier expeditions each year. Kenai Fjords National
Park also has one of the most accessible glaciers in
Alaska, Exit Glacier. There are numerous,
non-strenuous, interpretive trails that lead right
to the face of the glacier. With all the park has to
offer, Kenai Fjords is a must for any Southcentral
Alaska vacation.
Visitor information
Kenai
Fjords National Park is located on the southern edge
of the Kenai Peninsula. The port town of Seward is
the main access center for the National Park, and is
where the NPS Visitor Center is located. Kenai
Fjords National Park’s summer operating season
begins in early May and ends in late September. Seward can be
reached from Anchorage by railroad or car. Numerous
cruise ships depart from Seward, so a visit to Kenai
Fjords National park is possible before or after
your
Alaska Cruise.
The main Visitors Center is open from 8:30am to 7pm
daily during the summer months. There is also a
Nature Center located at Exit Glacier which offers
ranger guided hikes. Seward has numerous hotels, bed
& breakfasts, restaurants, and shops.
Day Cruises into the
park
The
best way to experience Kenai Fjords National park is
with a day cruise, and there are quite a few to
choose from. Six to eight hour cruises are recommended for
guests wishing to experience the glaciers, wildlife,
and history the park has to offer. A four hour
Resurrection Bay Cruise is perfect for visitors with
limited time. Evening dinner cruises are also
available. All of these cruises depart from the
Seward small boat harbor, and the majority are timed
to meet trains coming from and departing to
Anchorage.
Wilderness
Lodges
There
are two wilderness lodges located in Kenai Fjords
National Park / Resurrection Bay.
Kenai Fjords
Wilderness Lodge is located on Fox
Island in Resurrection Bay. The Lodge is
reached by a one hour boat cruise from Seward. Upon
arrival, guests are treated to a
wonderful salmon bake. Beach and
mountain trail hiking is available on the island and
a 9.5 hour park cruise is included with overnights.
The second lodge is the only one located within the
Kenai Fjords National Park boundaries. The brand new
Kenai Fjords
Glacier Lodge is located on the shores
of a protected lagoon, which offers dramatic views
of the Pederson Glacier. Activities at the lodge
include sea kayaking, hiking, and coastal
explorations via motorized skiff. Enroute to
the lodge, guests enjoy a five hour boat cruise
through the park.
