Glacier Bay
National Park
A Marine Wilderness
Mosaic
What
you will find
Glacier Bay National Park is a marine wilderness
with glaciers, mountains, coastlines, fjords,
rivers, and lakes. This land was carved by giant
glaciers that once dominated the area. The park is
in constant change, for glaciers have been rapidly
receding over the past 200 years. Many believe this
is due to global climate change, and Glacier Bay has
become a virtual laboratory for scientists studying
the phenomenon. Whether it is by cruise ship or small
boat tour, Glacier Bay National Park is best
explored on the water. The fjords are full of marine
wildlife such as whales, porpoises, sea lions,
seals, and otters. The tidewater glaciers are easily
accessed by boats, and the retreat of these glaciers
opens the lands for numerous plants and animals.
Glacier Bay National Park is perfect for any
Southeast Alaska Vacation.
Visitor information
The
summer season is from late May to early September. Glacier Bay National Parks
Headquarters is located in Gustavus, approximately
30 minute flight from Juneau. The information
desk at the visitor center is open from
approximately 11am to 9pm,
with an Information Center for
boaters and campers open from 8am to 5pm. Gustavus
is accessed by small plane flight from Juneau. A day excursion to
Glacier Bay is an option for guests staying in
Juneau, and overnight accommodations are available
in the park and Gustavus. Many inside passage cruises
include Glacier Bay National Park in their
itinerary.
Accessibility
A great way to experience Glacier Bay
National Park is with a Cruise West Glacier Bay
cruise. These 3 and 4 night small ship cruises bring
guests up close to the glaciers, something not
possible on the larger ships. Holland America
and other large cruise ships visit Glacier
Bay National Park as they sail through the inside
passage. For guests staying in Gustavus or taking a
day trip from Juneau, day cruises depart each day
from Glacier Bay lodge.
Park lodges
The only lodge located within the National Park
boundary is Glacier Bay Lodge. The lodge
consists of a main building with guest rooms located
on either wing. A sitting area with fireplace,
park interpretive center, gift shop, and restaurant
are available to guests. The Glacier Bay Inn
and Bear Track Inn are located in Gustavus, and
provide a more personal experience.
